LIVING IN THAILAND

The Cool Season is Here

As the weather cools down and December begins Thailand becomes a very festive place. This is not just because of Christmas and New Year, but also because December 5th is Father’s Day in Thailand. This day is not only a celebration of fathers, but is also His Majesty’s Birthday and is very widely celebrated in Thailand. There is a lot to do and a lot to see during this season, and for many people it is the best time to be in Thailand. Let’s look at some of the best seasonal activities.

Camping

Cold season is surely the best time of year for camping. Whether you are a true nature lover and are prepared to ‘rough-it’, or you prefer ‘glamping’ (glamorous camping), Thailand has what you are looking for.

Some of the most popular popular locations for camping are Khao Yai National Park, Khao Sok National Park and Farm Chokchai campground, but there are some great locations closer to Bangkok as well.

From December 19-21 two outdoor festivals will be held. The first is the Wonderfruit Festival which will be held in Chonburi in the Fields at Siam Country Club just a short drive from Bangkok. This A- list festival features luxury camping, gourmet food from Paolo Vitaletti and David Thompson, music from stars like Chet Faker, Hugo and Woodkid and art.

The second big outdoor experience is Bangkok Docklands which will also be held from December 19 -21. The location is Sapan Taksin BTS and the festivities include camping, communal meals and music.

Beer Gardens

The seasonal beer gardens have become a modern tradition in Thailand. The best is the beer garden outside Central World which features live bands every day of the week. The Central World Beer Garden runs each year and always draws huge crowds. A great place to get into the festive season with all the lights and Christmas trees to help you along.

Many other great beer gardens also operate through the months of November and December too. These include some with live music, like those around Chongnonsi and Surasak BTS stations.

Live Music

In addition to the Wonderfruit Festival, a number of other festivals will be held this year. Big Mountain Music Festival in Khao Yai will be held from December 8-9 in Thailand’s most famous national park. The festival will feature famous Thai acts such as Big Ass, Jetset’er, Da Endorphine, Potato, Palmy and Scrubb.

Closer to Bangkok, The 808 Festival will be held at Bitec Bangna on December 9. Many other smaller music shows will be held both indoors and outdoors.

Shopping

Chiangmai Night Bazaar is a great place to do some Christmas shopping if you are in the north, and in Bangkok, Chatuchak Weekend market is the best place to get some great deals. The major shopping centres will also be holding holiday sales. Central Embassy will be holding their Merry Town celebration and The Mall will be holding major sales as well.
Whatever you decide to do, we hope you enjoy the cooler weather.
